Remove background noise in Premiere Pro & DaVinci

Learn how to quickly remove background noise in Premiere Pro & DaVinci Resolve using AutoCut Silences.

Step 1 – Open AutoCut Silences

  • In Premiere Pro: go to Window → Extensions → AutoCut.
  • In DaVinci Resolve: open the AutoCut panel.

Once AutoCut is open, select the AutoCut Silences feature. This is where the noise cleanup magic happens!

Step 2 – Select the section and audio track

You can process your entire timeline or just a specific section:

  • Define the range you want to clean.
  • Choose the audio track with your voice or main dialogue.
  • Make sure you’re not selecting music or sound effects tracks—you want Silences to focus only on the voice.

Click "Validate section" to confirm your selection.

Step 3 – Set the noise threshold

The Noise threshold tells AutoCut which sounds are “silence” and should be muted.

  • Set it just above the level of the unwanted noise you hear between phrases.
  • If noise is still present, increase the threshold slightly.
  • If natural breaths or quiet words disappear, lower it.

Step 4 – Choose a pacing preset

Your pacing choice controls how fast silences are muted and how transitions feel:

  • Sharp/Fast: perfect for tutorials, gaming videos, and content where you want quick, tight edits.
  • Gentle/Slow: ideal for interviews, vlogs, and situations where a natural flow matters.

You can also fine-tune the fade lengths and timings if the presets don’t match your needs exactly.

Step 5 – Enable "Mute Silences"

This is the most important step. Turn on "Mute silences" instead of cutting them.

  • Your video stays untouched—no jump cuts or timing changes.
  • Only the silent parts are muted, removing the noise while keeping your visuals intact.

Step 6 – Preview and apply

Click "Generate preview" to see the result before applying. If it sounds good, launch AutoCut Silences.

Your audio is now clean and ready to export!

Bonus tips for better audio cleanup

  • Record in a quiet environment whenever possible—less noise means less work in post.
  • Separate dialogue, music, and effects into different tracks before applying Silences.
  • Combine with light EQ or compression for a polished, professional sound.
  • Always preview before applying to avoid muting parts you want to keep.
